If You Get Lost Backpacking

What to do if you get lost backpacking? SENDY has this advice:

If you get lost while backpacking, it's important to stay calm and take the following steps:

Stop and assess your situation: Try to determine how you got lost and what direction you need to go to return to the trail.

Stay put: If you're not sure which way to go, it's best to stay put until you have a better understanding of your situation. This will also make it easier for search and rescue teams to find you if necessary.

Signal for help: If you have a whistle, use it to signal for help. If you don't have a whistle, yell or make noise in any other way you can.

Use your map and compass: If you have a map and compass, use them to determine your location and the direction you need to go. If you don't have these tools, try to remember landmarks or features that can help you retrace your steps.

Start a fire: If it's getting dark or you're in an area with inclement weather, start a fire to stay warm and signal for help.

Conserve your energy and resources: Try to conserve your food, water, and energy, and stay as warm and dry as possible.

Don't panic: Stay calm and focused, and don't make any hasty decisions that could put you in further danger.

If you have a satellite communicator or other form of emergency communication, use it to call for help. If you don't have one, try to make your way back to the trail or find a clear area to signal for help.

Remember: Always let someone know your itinerary and expected return time before you go backpacking, so they can take action if you don't return as planned. And be sure to carry essential gear, including a map, compass, and emergency supplies, every time.
