Dry Bags!

Dry bags are essential items for the great outdoors, especially if you engage in activities like kayaking, canoeing, hiking, camping, or any water-based adventures. They’re designed to keep your gear and valuables dry and protected from water, sand, dirt, and other elements.

Things to consider when choosing a dry bag:

Material:

Vinyl or PVC: they’re durable, waterproof, and typically more affordable. However, they can be less flexible and heavier.

Nylon or Polyester with a waterproof coating: these are lightweight, flexible, and often more resistant to abrasion. Look for bags with a high-denier* rating for added durability.

Closure System:

Roll-top Closure: the most common closure system for dry bags. You roll down the top several times and then secure it with a buckle or clip to create a watertight seal.

Zipper Closure: Some feature a zipper closure for easier access to your gear. Make sure it's a waterproof zipper and consider using an additional roll-top closure for added protection.

Size and Capacity: dry bags come in various sizes, from small pouches for smartphones and keys to large duffel bags for clothing and camping gear. Choose a size that fits your needs and the volume of gear you plan to carry.

Visibility: bags in bright colors or with reflective strips increase visibility. You’ll find this very helpful in low-light conditions or in the water.

Attachment Points: sturdy attachment points or D-rings that allow you to secure your bag to a kayak, canoe, backpack, rooftop or other gear are essential.

Durability: check the quality of the seams, stitching, and overall construction of the dry bag. Reinforced seams and welded construction will add to durability and waterproofness.

Usage: determine the primary use of the dry bag. If you're kayaking or canoeing, a cylindrical-shaped dry bag that fits easily into a kayak hatch might be ideal. For hiking or backpacking, a backpack-style dry bag would be best. You can also find super light-weight, non-submersible, dry bags to protect your sleeping bag and clothing from the elements by packing it inside your backpack.

Additional Features: you may want extra features like external pockets, padded shoulder straps, or mesh panels for ventilation based on your personal preferences and adventure.

Test It: it's essential to properly seal and secure the bag to ensure maximum waterproof protection. Test your dry bag before heading out by placing a paper towel inside and submerging it in water to check for any leaks.

Investing in a quality dry bag will help protect your gear and valuables from water damage, so you can enjoy your outdoor adventures worry-free.

* The Denier Rating: refers to the thickness or density of the fibers used in a fabric. In the context of dry bags and other outdoor gear, a higher denier rating indicates a thicker and more durable material that’s more resistant to abrasion, tearing, and punctures compared to a lower denier fabric.

Low Denier (Less than 200D):

Lightweight

Flexible

Suitable for items like rain jackets, windbreakers, and some backpacks

Less durable and more prone to abrasion and tearing

Medium Denier (200D - 600D):

Balanced between weight and durability

Commonly used in backpacks, duffel bags, and some dry bags

Offers a good combo of flexibility and strength

High Denier (600D and above):

Heavy-duty

Extremely durable and abrasion and puncture-resistant

Ideal for heavy-duty backpacks, duffel bags, dry bags, and gear that will be exposed to rough conditions

Less flexible compared to lower denier fabrics

The denier rating is just one thing to consider when evaluating the quality and durability of a product. The overall construction, seam quality, closure system, and material type play crucial roles in determining the performance and longevity of the gear.
