Traditional Camber
Traditional camber is one of the classic snowboard profile shapes. It refers to the curvature of the snowboard when it is resting on a flat surface. This profile shows a single, smooth arch from tip to tail with the center of the board curving away from the ground. The design creates an upward curve in the middle of the board, with the ends of the board being the contact points (where the board touches the snow).
This profile shape is known to be responsive and stable, providing excellent edge control and strong and consistent contact with the snow This allows for precise carving and a stable ride, especially at high speeds.
The camber profile stores energy as the rider flexes the board. This energy is released when the rider unloads, providing excellent pop for jumps and ollies. The pronounced curve underfoot enhances edge hold on hard packed snow and in icy conditions, making traditional camber boards a good choice for aggressive riders who want maximum grip.
Some snowboard manufacturers have introduced variations of traditional camber profiles, such as "camber with rocker" or "cam-out." These hybrid profiles combine traditional camber with some rocker (reverse camber) elements to enhance certain characteristics like float in powder or forgiveness in turns.
Despite its advantages, traditional camber boards have some limitations:
These profiles can be less forgiving, making them less suitable for beginners or riders looking for a more relaxed, catch-free ride.
They tend to sink in deep powder snow due to the camber's downward curve in the center of the board so riders may have to work harder to stay afloat.
The camber profile also requires more maintenance when it comes to waxing and edge tuning to maintain optimal performance.
With all of the options out there, it’s important for riders to choose the right board profile for their preferences and terrain.
Traditional camber snowboards are preferred by experienced riders who enjoy aggressive carving, powerful edge control, and the feeling of maximum pop and responsiveness. However, many modern snowboard profiles, such as rocker, camber-rocker hybrids, and flat profiles, offer different advantages, catering to a wide range of riding styles and mountain conditions. Enjoy!
