HARNESS FEATURES
Gear Loops: these loops are designed to carry your climbing gear… cams, nuts, and quickdraws, etc. Harnesses with two gear loops are most suited for gym climbing, top roping, and sport climbing, while harnesses with 4+ gear loops are best suited for trad, multipitch, and ice climbing.
Ice Clipper Slots: harnesses with ice clipper slots are designed specifically for ice climbing. They’re used to rack ice screws, picks, and other ice tools.
Leg Loops:
Adjustable leg loops are great for ice climbing and mountaineering, where you need to put your harness on over boots and crampons or when frequently adding or subtracting layers.
Jayne Sit Harness (Edelrid)
Fixed leg loopsoffer less to deal with, are good for sport climbing, and some people actually prefer the fixed fit.
Sirana Climbing Harness (Edelrid)
Harness Construction: less expensive harnesses tend to be bulkier and don't breathe as well. More expensive harnesses have better ventilation and lighter padding and are more comfortable to wear for extended periods.
The Right Fit
Harness waist belts should fit over your hips (Iliac Crest) and should be snug enough that you cannot pull it down. The buckle adjustment should be about halfway and not maxed out at either end.
Womens C-quence Harness Waist Belt (Arc'teryx)
Leg Loops should be comfortable, not tight. You should be able to place a flat hand between your leg and the harness. Climb on!
