Take Your Kids Mountain Biking!
Taking children mountain biking for the first time can be a great way to build confidence, coordination, a love of the outdoors and respect for the weather.
Here's how to keep things fun and safe:
🚴 What You’ll Need
Kid-Sized Bike (with gears and hand brakes)
A lightweight bike with 20" wheels is typically right for a 6-year-old.
Look for a low standover height and geometry designed for control, like the:
Prevelo Alpha 3

Woom OFF

Spawn Yama Jama

If they’re new to biking, a single-speed or one with a few gears is fine.
Helmet
A properly fitting helmet is non-negotiable. Get your kids involved in choosing one with a design they like.

Gloves & Pads (Optional but helpful)
Full-finger gloves can protect from scrapes.
Knee/elbow pads for added confidence on rough terrain.
Hydration & Snacks
A small hydration pack or water bottle that they can use independently.
Snacks = happy kid, especially on longer trails.
Proper Clothing
In mountain biking, anything goes... breathable layers and closed-toe shoes with good grip (like skate-style shoes) are best.
Consider sunglasses or clear glasses for eye protection.
What You Need to Know
Pick the Right Trail
Look for easy trails, fire roads, or smooth singletrack.
Avoid steep climbs or technical descents until they’ve got more experience.
Check for short loops or bail-out options in case of fatigue or meltdowns.
Set Expectations
Keep it fun, not about speed or distance.
Stop often. Look at bugs. Throw sticks. Let them lead when safe.
Teach Trail Etiquette
Leave no trace—pack out everything you take.
Braking gently, especially the front brake.
Looking ahead instead of down.
Standing on the pedals when going over bumps.
How to shift (if they have gears).
Lead by Example
Your energy and attitude will set the tone. If you’re relaxed and having fun, chances are they will be too. Ride on!
