How to Remove a Traction Pad

How to Remove a Surfboard Traction Pad

So it’s time to bid farewell to your trusty traction pad. Whether you're swapping it out for a new one or going for the smooth, pad-less look, here's a step-by-step guide:

Tools

  • Hairdryer
  • Utility knife
  • Plastic scraper or old credit card
  • Wax comb
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Rag or paper towels

How To

Warm It Up: use a hairdryer and warm up your traction pad evenly, focusing on small sections at a time.

Get an Edge: once it's toasty, slide a utility knife or a razor blade under one edge of the traction pad. Keep the blade flat against the board to avoid gouging it.

Peel Slow and Low: using the blade, gently lift an edge and start peeling the pad off slowly. Keep the hair dryer handy to warm up stubborn spots as you go.

Scrape the Residue: after the pad is off, use the plastic scraper or an old credit card to remove any leftover adhesive. Take your time to avoid scratching the board.

Wax Comb Magic: if there's wax residue, use a wax comb to scrape it off. Wax combs are excellent for cleaning up sticky remnants.

Clean It Up: dampen a rag or paper towels with rubbing alcohol and wipe down the whole area to remove any remaining adhesive. It also helps prep the surface for a new pad or wax.

Tips

Be Patient: Removing a traction pad takes time, especially if it's been on for a while.

Goo Gone Alternative: if you're dealing with stubborn adhesive, a product like Goo Gone can be effective. Follow the instructions on the label.

Now you're ready for a fresh start, whether you choose a new traction pad or the liberating feel of waxed perfection... Enjoy!
