How to Attach a Surfboard Traction Pad
Applying a traction pad to your surfboard is straightforward. Positioned near the tail, it assists in maintaining foot placement while riding waves. Typically made of Thermoformed EVA, traction pads vary in textures, shapes, colors, arch contours, and kick profiles. Surfers choose them based on personal preference and comfort.
The Process:
You'll need a traction pad, a card or scraper, a utility knife, a rag, and a blow dryer if the weather isn't warm and sunny.
Clean the surfboard's tail: wipe a new board with a towel to remove any fiberglass dust. If there's wax on the board, heat it by placing the board in the sun, pouring hot water over the wax, or using a hair dryer on the Low setting. Scrape off the wax with a comb or plastic card. Clean the area with a rag (use wax remover if needed).
Place the traction pad: unwrap the traction pad, keeping the backside cover on. Use the stringer as a reference point and position the pad where you prefer, aligning it with the leash plug or the front, center, or back of the rear fin. Lightly trace the pad's outline with a pencil.
Sand the area (optional).
Peel and stick: slowly peel back the paper covering the traction pad's glue. Place the pad within the pencil outline, starting from the front and working toward the tail.Press down firmly, moving from the center to the edges to avoid air pockets.
Wait: ideally, let your board sit for 24 hours before hitting the waves. If the surf is exceptional, note that some have bypassed this step without negative consequences. Aloha!
