The Best Waterproof Fabrics

Generally outwear waterproofing is measured in mm. We're pretty sure it's how high a square inch (or maybe its a cm?) of water can be stacked on the fabric without it penetrating. We often see numbers between 5,000mm and 20,000mm, although some fabrics can go as high as 40,000mm. Of course breathability is important too. After all, you'll get wet from the inside if sweat can't escape.

Many brands have been trying to solve this very problem so we dove in to try and figure out some of the differences between the most common waterproof fabrics.

There are several waterproof fabrics on the market that are considered to be among the best for outdoor and athletic wear.

Here are some of the most popular and highly-regarded waterproof fabrics:

Gore-Tex: Developed by W. L. Gore & Associates, Gore-Tex is a breathable, waterproof membrane that is often used in outdoor clothing and gear. It is known for its durability and ability to keep the wearer dry in even the harshest conditions.

HyVent: Developed by The North Face, HyVent is a waterproof and breathable fabric that is often used in outdoor clothing and gear. It is known for its breathable performance and ability to keep the wearer dry in heavy rain and snow.

eVent: Developed by eVent Fabrics, eVent is a waterproof and breathable fabric that is known for its exceptional breathability and ability to keep the wearer dry in extreme conditions.

Dri-FIT: Developed by Nike, Dri-FIT is a synthetic fabric that is designed to wick moisture away from the skin and keep the wearer dry and comfortable during physical activity.

Pertex: Developed by Pertex, Pertex is a waterproof and breathable fabric that is often used in outdoor clothing and gear. It is known for its lightweight, packable design and ability to keep the wearer dry in wet conditions.

These are just a few examples of the best waterproof fabrics on the market. The best fabric for a particular application will depend on a variety of factors, including the intended use, climate, and your personal preferences.
