Sun Protection for Outdoor Adventures

Sun Protection

Protecting yourself from the sun is crucial when hiking to prevent sunburn and long-term skin damage. Here are some important sun protection options to consider:

Sunscreen:

Grab a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and slather it on every inch of exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears, and the back of your hands. Reapply every couple of hours, especially if you're perspiring or swimming.

Sun-Protective Clothing:

Style meets functionality with lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants made of UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) fabric. Look for clothing that covers as much skin as possible without causing you to overheat.

Wide-brimmed Hat:

Wear a hat with an ultra-wide brim to shade your face, neck, and ears. Consider a hat with built-in UPF for double protection.

Sunglasses:

Protect your eyes from UV rays with sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Opt for wrap-around sunglasses for full coverage, combining style with protection.

Seek Shade:

Seek refuge in shaded areas, especially during peak sunlight hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Rest in shaded areas during breaks to minimize sun exposure.

Hydration:

Dehydration can make you more susceptible to sun-related illnesses. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and add electrolytes, especially if you’re hiking in hot climates, to keep your body balanced.

Sun Umbrella:

Pack a portable sun umbrella for additional protection if you're hiking in an area with little natural shade. If hiking with a child, look for sunshades on baby carriers.

Sun Sleeves and Leg Sleeves:

These lightweight sleeves provide additional protection for your arms and legs while allowing air circulation to keep you cool.

Sunscreen Lip Balm:

Protect your lips with a lip balm that contains SPF, as lips can burn just like the rest of your skin.

Plan Your Hike:

Timing is everything. Be smart when planning your hikes. Go early or go late to avoid the peak sun hours. Your skin will thank you, and you might  catch an epic sunrise or sunset as a bonus.

Stay cool and enjoy the hike. Tailor your sun protection according to elevation, terrain, and weather. Reapply your sunscreen, stay hydrated, and soak in the adventure!
