Backpacking Essentials

We are going to keep this one simple, because this is how we do it. Packing just what you need and nothing you don't is the way to move through the backcountry during summer.


Here is a list of essential items to consider packing for a backpacking trip:


  1. Shelter: Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad
  2. Clothing: Synthetic or wool layers for warmth, waterproof jacket, hat and gloves, quick-drying clothes for activities, and extra socks
  3. Footwear: sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes or boots
  4. Backpack: with a capacity suitable for the length of your trip
  5. Food and hydration: high-calorie, non-perishable food, water bottle or hydration system, portable stove and fuel, cookware and utensils
  6. First-aid kit: basic supplies, insect repellent, sunblock, pain relievers
  7. Navigation and communication: map, compass, GPS device, and a charged cell phone
  8. Light: headlamp or flashlight, with extra batteries
  9. Miscellaneous: multi-tool or knife, fire starter, and emergency whistle


Remember to adjust the list based on the specific needs of your trip and weather conditions.
